In today’s day and age it is truly remarkable to see just how much outdoor recreation affects the daily lives of people living in the west. In an era of economic depression, the great outdoors are still helping many people put a roof over their head.
In Colorado, hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation has substantial impact on the economy of our great state. Our state thrives from the outdoor industry, our mountains are famous for world class skiing, we have one of the largest elk populations in the world and our rivers and streams provide the state with ample tourism opportunities in the form of fishing and white water rafting. People come form all over the world to experience what many of us are fortunate to see everyday, the mountains, the allure, beauty and majestic mystique of the west, something that should never be overlooked or taken for granted.
Moreover, the outdoor industry has created a plethora of jobs and career opportunities, including but not limited to wildlife management jobs, outfitting, lodging and guiding. Local economies in turn benefit as their restaurants, shops and hotels thrive from vacation and outdoor enthusiast sales and reservations.
I for one feel truly blessed to live in a state with so many wonderful resources and opportunities. We are also extremely fortunate to have many public lands in the form of open space, national forest and national parks. As we move forward it is important to continue to protect and respect our public lands. For those of us that utilize these lands as a way of life it is important to be true stewards of our environment. Always take the extra minute and pick up a piece of trash or share your favorite river or stream with someone new. Maybe take a kid fishing, it could forever change their life. Whatever you do this summer in our great outdoors be safe and enjoy.
