As 2008 comes to a close, it is becoming apparent that most of my equipment has seen a good year on the water. Boots have loose and missing spikes, waders have slow leaks and pin-holes, and fly lines are dirty and warn. Before I used to spend so much time on the water I wondered why there was so much new gear created each year. Now I know why - equipment and gear is designed to wear out, its just a matter of time before you need to go shopping again. In years past I could get several seasons out of my gear, but now I end up making major purchases each and every year, not because I want new stuff but because I need to replace old and busted items. At first I was resistant to the idea of buying new gear each and every year. Now it is an expectation going into each new year that I need to be looking for waders, boots, lines, etc.
So as I anxiously await the arrival of the 2009 items I am excited to see some changes on the way. Simms is planning on a whole new approach to some of their go to lines - we'll see if they can master the idea of spikes on a wading boot. Sage has a new ultra fast action rod that will most likely be purchased by many who don't know how to cast it. Lamson has revamped their reels and added a new low-end reel. The list goes on and on.
Stay tuned for reviews on these items and more.
