The South Platte river drainage is at about 95% and the Colorado river drainage is at about 105% of normal snow pack as of today. That is good news for the fly anglers on the Front Range. Here we are at the beginning of February and it looks like we have the water for another epic fishing season. Normal flows from run off and consistent draws from the western slope should keep our Front Range waters in peak condition this season. Both the bugs and the fish prosper in the predictable flows of a normal season and since the 2007 season produced some of the best hatches we had seen in the past 5 or 6 years, we are really looking forward to how nature will follow that up.
Look for South Boulder Creek and the South Fork of the St. Vrain to be buzzing by April and if our snow pack holds out they should continue to swarm well into October; Royal Wulff anyone?
The southern part of our state including the Arkansas, San Juan, Rio Grande and Gunnison are all well above average. Which is good news for Mother's Day Caddis hatch on the Arkansas, the flushing flows for the quality water below Navajo Dam on the San Juan and the Salmon Fly hatch in the Gunnison Gorge.
