Three of our guides and 2 prospective guide fished the Canyon on Friday. During the best hours of the day to fish in the winter 11AM-3PM. We had a good day. The fish were defiantly on the feed and moving around enough to be caught. With the water so low 39.2 CFS the fish we understandable spooky. See out fishing reports page for historic flow details and current flow and weather. The gusty wind was only a problem down at Family Hole where the waves on the water made getting a drift next to impossible. The wind was gusty so when it was not blowing we were catching fish. We also enjoyed one of the best things about the outdoors in Colorado, a Bald Eagle flying up and down the canyon keeping a close eye on us and the fish... another sure sign it was a good day to be hunting.
The Gill Trail is snow packed and slippery. Rubber soles and spikes are your best friend navigating the 30+ minute hike on the Gill Trail to the river. We saw two reds in the gravel above the Ice box but there were no fish on them. We fished a few egg patterns but they were not on them yet. The standard worm, beatis, midge patters were the ticket of the day (see the fishing report page of details on hatch and fly patterns).
Spring is almost in the air. It was nice to get back out on the water and we are looking forward to a great season, so far it looks like we will have the water for it. Stay tuned we will keep you posted as things begin to heat up!
